Katherine Schober, Founder and CEO of Germanology Unlocked

Katherine Schober, founder and CEO of Germanology Unlocked, is a German-English genealogy translator, author, and educator. Her German translation work, focusing on the old German script, has been featured on the last eight seasons of the PBS television show Finding Your Roots, and will be featured in the upcoming season as well. With over a decade of professional experience, she is dedicated to helping others uncover their German ancestry and preserve their family stories for future generations.

Katherine offers services focused on deciphering old German handwriting, which include translations, webinars, classes, and workshops. She has been a featured speaker at major national genealogy conferences over the years, such as RootsTech, The International German Genealogy Partnership Conference, NGS, and more. There, she shares her expertise on working with German records and deciphering the handwriting.

Combining her deep knowledge of the German language with a passion for genealogy, Katherine strives to make your journey of uncovering your family history exciting, fun, and, most importantly, doable for all!

When does the workshop start and finish?

The workshop starts on January 23 and runs for eight weeks, with live classes held every Thursday at 2:00 pm EST/11:00 am PST. there will be a one-week break during the week of RootsTech, the biggest genealogy event of the year (March 6), All sessions will be available to download shortly after each live session, so you can review the material anytime you need.

How long do I have access to the recordings?

You’ll have lifetime access to all the recordings. They’ll be available to download shortly after each live session, so you can review the material anytime you work on your genealogy.

Do I need any experience with German to take this course?

No prior experience with German is needed! This workshop is designed for both beginners and experienced genealogists. We’ll guide you step-by-step through the basics of reading old German handwriting (which may be a review for some) and build up to advanced reading techniques.

Can I download and print the materials, or will I only be able to see them on my computer?

You can download, print, and keep all the materials, including worksheets and vocabulary guides, to use whenever you need.

What if I miss a session?

Every session is recorded and made available for you to download and watch at your convenience. We do recommend watching each session before the following week's lesson, however.

If I have questions during the 8 weeks, where should I ask them?

You can ask questions during the live sessions or on our private discussion board, where you’ll get support from Katherine and your fellow workshop students. You can also reach out to Katherine via e-mail at admin@germanologyunlocked.com.

Will I receive any materials before the workshop starts?

Yes! As soon as you register, you’ll get immediate access to our exclusive German Genealogy Vocabulary and Article Package. This way, you can start familiarizing yourself with common German words and phrases before the live sessions begin in January.
